Survivors are transformative forces in the society. They are powerful leaders, who inspire those who succumb to defeat in life. For such people, the tragedies become a springboard - to support other people. The pain that caused them – Physical or mental – hurt, becomes their weapon to fight injustice.
One such survivor is an acid attack victim, Laxmi. Laxmi was subjected to acid attack when she had rejected a proposal from a man who wished to marry her. Her journey since then can be akin to that of a soldier. It was not an easy journey. She lost her will to live, faced humiliation, had suicidal tendencies; yet she persevered.
In today’s era, where people constantly criticize each other over skin colour or looks; Laxmi had to fight a battle where she had lost her inner being which was shattered due to acid attack.
Her sheer valour and will power, marked a new legacy in the history of humanity. To start with, Laxmi advocated against acid attacks, which eventually resulted in regulating the sale of acid in 2013. Further, acid attack survivors in India have been given rights under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. It was post Nirbhaya rape case, when Laxmi got the courage to fight against acid attack violence. She has opened her café, Sheroes in Agra, to give employment to acid attack survivors. She wanted to attempt suicide, but her perseverance and inner strength saved her. Let’s always be sensitive towards dignity of life and respect every individual.
